After a patient developed a blocked artery in the mesenteric area of his circulatory system, doctors failed to diagnose the atherosclerosis until it was too late. The lack of blood flow resulted in massive necrosis throughout the patient’s intestines with perforations leaking fecal fluid from the anatomy.
Challenge
Had care providers properly diagnosed the obstructed artery, they could have easily prevented the mesenteric ischemia through two procedures: 1) using a stent to expand the artery or 2) creating a bypass to restore blood flow around the obstructed area.
Approach
Paul D’Amore and Ace McBride needed a visual presentation that would establish their client’s mechanism of injury and show how it could have easily been avoided. We built them a custom Digital Injury Summary equipped with a medical animation series that would achieve the following visual objectives:

Establish the mechanism of injury: how the misdiagnosed mesenteric ischemia resulted in a severely damaged abdominal anatomy.

Demonstrate how this catastrophe could have easily been avoided had care providers performed a cardiac stent procedure to restore blood flow by expanding the artery.

Show how this catastrophe could have also been avoided had care providers performed a bypass grafting procedure to restore blood around the obstructed area.

Establishing the Mechanism of Injury
The first animation shows how a clogged artery caused massive damage throughout the patient’s intestines. The animation opens with the massive weight loss suffered by the patient as his condition progressed.
After demonstrating the massive weight loss, the animation breaks down the digestive anatomy to establish the location of organs impacted by the obstructed artery.

How a Stent Procedure Could Have Prevented Catastrophe
After demonstrating the mechanism through which this patient suffered and died, the next two animations show how this condition could have been easily addressed had it been properly recognized and diagnosed by care providers.
This first alternative scenario shows how a stent could have been placed in the artery and a balloon could have been expanded to restore blood flow to the intestinal anatomy.

How a Bypass Could Have Prevented Catastrophe
The second alternative scenario shows how care providers could have prevented the mesenteric ischemia had they restored blood through a bypass graft around the obstructed area.
Either of these procedures could have easily prevented the horrific outcome that Mr. D’Amore and Mr. McBride’s client ultimately suffered, and the animation series helped jurors understand why their client’s widow deserved a $1.67M verdict for her husband’s pain, suffering, and wrongful death.
