The Power of Organization: Using Data Visualization to Organize Your Case Details

There are three elements to a good and accurate visual: data, function, and design. Too much or too little of each category will result in a visual that is less effective. In the past we discussed the importance of well-designed visual data, as well as when to choose Informational designs to present your case data. We also broke down the strategies when Compare & Contrast visuals are the most applicable.

A powerful tactic we apply to communicate the data in your case clearly is ORGANIZATIONAL graphics.

When you want to visually compare data and categories, illustrate a particular relationship, highlight differences and similarities, or represent certain quantities and/or proportions, using Organizational visuals can be extraordinarily helpful in clarifying your message.

These are the questions to ask yourself before we begin collaborating on a design process that includes graphics that Organize data in a visual form:

• How does the data need to be categorized?
• Who is involved and where does responsibility lie?
• What hierarchy, rank, or order do we need to reveal?
• Are there groups or classifications that are similar or different?
• What relationships do we need to highlight between individuals or data points?
• What are the shared elements or values between groups and data points?

Hierarchy graphics show the structure of an organization and the relationships and relative ranks of its parts and positions.

The example below shows the hierarchy of a property management organization, and clearly represents the reporting relationships and chain of command within the organization.

Table graphics facilitate the arrangement of numerical information or data in rows and columns. They can help view relationships, progression, and severity.

The first table example below illustrates different hemorrhage classifications, easily showing the progression of severity and symptoms in relation to each class. The second table example below shows a client’s abnormal ECHO results in comparison to the normal range, clearly establishing the severity of her symptoms.

Also known as a mind map, network charts are a different way of visually organizing information without a clear hierarchy. A single concept can have primary and secondary relationships. This way we can indicate more distant relationships to an original theme, category or idea.

In this example, cardiac endocarditis is the primary condition that all of the other concerning symptoms and abnormal vitals connect back to. This is a powerful way to organize complex relationships into a simple visual.

Venn diagrams use circles to show the relationships among things or finite groups of things. Circles that overlap have a commonality while circles that do not overlap do not share those traits. Venn diagrams help to visually represent the similarities and differences between two or more concepts.

The below example shows the importance of communication - the left when communication is successful, and the right when there is a disconnect. The diagram allows a simple visual organization of each component and how they overlap.

The pyramid chart is a triangle diagram used to represent hierarchies and volumes visually. The triangle is divided into multiple sections, illustrating vertically top-down/apex-base date structure or relationships. An inverted pyramid functions as a funnel chart as well and can distinguish larger or broader influences or actions compared with smaller, more restrictive numbers or actions.

In the example below, we apply a pyramid to show safety hierarchy in a top-down method - organized from most effective to least effective.

The checklist is a very simple and effective way to organize data if a relationship exists or an action was taken. It typically takes the form of a yes/no question to relevant statements or questions regarding a patient’s status or a care provider’s actions. This method to organize your data is effective as a static or a build-on exhibit.

The checklist example below clearly shows the standard steps that should have been taken during care for the patient. It organizes the data in this case into a format that clearly shows either yes the step was taken, or no it was not.
