Using Data Visualization to Effectively Communicate The Details of Your Cases

Visualizing data is a way to help viewers see patterns that were not obvious before. They can help a person better draw conclusions about a situation and understand the circumstances on a deeper level that may not have been immediately obvious before. Data is clearly laid out in a manner that highlights the points you want to make without diverting from the facts, while also capturing attention and increasing retention of information.

When deciding to add a particular design to convey data points in your case presentation it is important to consider who will be looking at it, why it is important that they see it, and in what context it will be presented. Understanding how your data needs to work, and what it needs to communicate will help collaboration with our artists in designing a highly functional asset.

Consider these questions before we get started in this collaborative design process:

• What types of data do I have and is the bulk of that data readily available?(Such as statistics, timeline of events, increasing or decreasing numbers, etc.)
• Who will be viewing the visual data? (Will this be shown to an expert, a judge, an insurance adjuster?)
• What decision do I want the viewer to make after viewing the data? (Do you need to show fault or negligence, or pain and suffering?)
• What do I want the viewer to take away with the insight they’ve gained? (What decisions should they want to make?)
• What complex concept or message do I want to convey? (Focus on the depth of the story you want to tell.)

We then combine the answers to these questions with accurate data and eye-catching designs to create a visual component that can be used to make your case more powerful than ever.

One tactic we utilize to communicate the data in your case clearly is INFORMATIONAL graphics.

Informational graphics can quickly explain concepts, methods, or show how things work, move, or change. It’s a tactic to apply to a single story, proportion, or statistic that you want to communicate.

Our team will collaborate with you to design a cohesive informational graphic that effectively showcases and highlights data in a way that’s simple and easy for your audience to understand.

A donut graph would be utilized when you have information that needs to explain how something affects a certain number of the population or other measurement such as volume. It provides the ability to show or compare multiple statistics at one time, and show a percentage of people or circumstances that might be affected by a certain outcome.

The example below compares the volume of blood lost next to the amount of blood remaining in Mrs. Smith’s body.

When you need to identify a specific person in a certain role (for example, a group of doctors with various responsibilities in a medical malpractice case), a line-up will help show who was involved, and what they are expected to do.

This example is a simple way of showing who was involved, and their expected job roles.

Matrix graphs are effective in communicating whether a relationship is present or absent - such as are things the same, or different? Are these outcomes expected or not expected? These graphs help us indicate where that relationship is, and how it’s important.

Below is a great example of a matrix graph. It clearly shows the different blood hemorrhage classifications, and the resulting symptoms.

Diagrams are a great design tool for us to apply when helping you explain complex concepts, methods, or health effects in a simple way to the viewer. It helps illustrate a certain condition or status, using labels to point out relevant information that may not be immediately obvious in order to educate the viewer.

The first example below identifies different areas of the body that are impacted by high blood pressure. The second example clearly shows differing stair levels in a case when someone fell.

In another way, pictographs are basically infographics. When applying these designs to your case visuals you illustrate the smaller part of a whole concept - something like a fraction or percentage - as a way to creatively display your information.

The pictograph below is an excellent example of how we showed the increasing blood alcohol level in a DUI case - a single measurement compared to a larger story.

When you need to compare one or more locations or distributions, or show one or more activity or phenomenon, we can design a graphical map. This tactic is helpful to communicate location (such as local, regional, national, or international) along with concentration of a certain value or data set.

The example below shows how the frequency of someone’s travel changed compared to before and after a particular incident.
