As a pickup truck was leaving a grocery store parking lot, it pulled into the pathway of an approaching bicyclist. The cyclist struck the passenger’s side door and flipped on to the hood. The police later found the accident was 100% the fault of the cyclist, and not the driver, as the cyclist had failed to yield.
Approach
Heading into trial, Michael D. Green, Esq., and Scott Montgomery, Esq., needed an illustration series that would capture all of their client’s numerous injuries with a focused emphasis on the jaw and shoulder injuries. We built an illustration series that would achieve the following visual objectives:

Summarize the numerous injuries the Plaintiff sustained as a result of the collision.

Demonstrate the ORIF surgery the Plaintiff would need to stabilize his jaw and teeth.

Break Down the ORIF surgery the Plaintiff would need to reduce his clavicle fracture.

Illustrate the Plaintiff’s continued malocclusion in his jaw that causes his teeth to remain misaligned.
Exhibit A: Injury Summary Illustration
The first exhibit breaks down every injury the Plaintiff suffered throughout his body in one cohesive visual. The two colorized X-rays along the left side highlight the victim’s shoulder dislocation, clavicle fracture, and finger dislocation while pointing out abrasions to his knee. The three images down the right side illustrate the Plaintiff’s jaw injuries along with colorized CT scans that reinforce these fractures with radiographic evidence.

Exhibit B: Maxillary ORIF Illustration
After establishing all of the Plaintiff’s injuries, the next exhibit hones in on the damage to his jaw, followed by the open reduction and internal fixation that was needed to repair it. The first image introduces the initial condition, which included an open mandibular symphysis fracture, a mandibular body fracture, and a chipped tooth. The next two images illustrate the placement of archbars, plates, and screws to stabilize the jaw. The final image concludes the exhibit with the exposure of the left body fracture.

Exhibit C: Illustrated ORIF of the Right Clavicle
The third exhibit demonstrates the open reduction and internal fixation surgery needed to reduce the Plaintiff’s clavicle fracture. The first image introduces the pre-op fracture with fibrous tissue between the fragments. The next three images show how the fibrous tissue was removed, the fracture was fixated, and the bone was stabilized using plates and screws. The final image depicts a colorized post-op X-ray of the Plaintiff’s clavicle while highlighting the metal hardware installed in his shoulder.

Exhibit D: Malocclusion Illustration
The final exhibit concludes the visual presentation with the long-term aftermath of the Plaintiff’s fractured jaw. Malocclusion is the abnormal positioning of the upper and lower teeth that causes the teeth to misalign when the jaw is closed. The Plaintiff in this case sustained severe malocclusion with a 2 mm mandibular midline shift - in addition to a chipped and two extruded teeth.
