$2.4M Verdict: Animated Ankle Crushed by Vehicle Results in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)

In this case, a vehicle at an intersection drove into a woman’s leg with her foot planted into the ground. The pressure broke the talus in her ankle into three different fractures that would need to be fixated with three giant screws. Months after her surgery, she would continue to feel a constant cycle of pain, burning, aching, and hypersensitivity around her ankle.

The first animation establishes how the Plaintiff’s ankle was fractured by the impact of the low-speed collision. The Plaintiff’s left foot was planted into the ground in such a way that when the vehicle impacted her leg, the force caused an avulsion in her talus that ripped her bone into three fragments. After demonstrating the mechanism of injury, the animation spins the ankle in 360 degrees to provide maximum context for the jury.

After we established what happened to the ankle, the next medical animation breaks down the specific ankle fractures within her ankle and the surgical fixation she would need to undergo as a result.

​First, the audience is introduced to the Plaintiff’s fractures alongside a colorized CT scan highlighting the damage in radiographic films. The Plaintiff suffered a comminuted talar fracture and sub-talar articular surface fracture with obvious signs of small bone fragments throughout the area. The animation then shows how three giant screwed were drilled into her talus to reduce the fractures. It concludes with a Post Op CT scan highlighting the screws.

The final animation was built to confront Mr. Taillieu’s most challenging objective: demonstrating how his client continues to suffer chronic pain as a result of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.

The animation opens with a high-level breakdown of the central nervous system. The brain communicates by sending signals down the spinal cord, which pass through the peripheral nerves to reach the arms and legs. Cells send signals back to the brain through similar pathways. Pain is one type of these signals.

The animation strategically anchored these concepts with visuals that simplified the complex processes and made it easier for jurors to understand why Mr. Taillieu’s client deserved a $2.4M verdict for her continued pain and suffering.
