When paramedics arrived at the scene of a violent high-speed collision, a pregnant mother was found in visible abdominal pain. The mother’s placenta had ruptured, her kidney was lacerated, and what was worse, her unborn baby’s skull and brain were brutally damaged.
Challenge
HIE can impact a child physically by damaging neural pathways, including the nerves that send signals to the muscles in a condition called cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy can often cause pain. Certain types of cerebral palsy can cause muscle spasms, contractures, and limited range of motion, which can make movement difficult and painful. The baby’s brain was irreversibly damaged. She had clinical activity consistent with seizures and had to be given medication to decrease her seizure activity, which Mrs. Ramos James argued was evidence that the baby could have experienced physical pain.
Approach
Laura Ramos James, Esq., Ramos James Law, PLLC, Austin, TX, needed a TBI presentation that would capture the magnitude of the baby’s traumatic brain injuries that resulted in death after the forced premature delivery. We delivered a medical illustration series that would achieve the following visual objectives:

Demonstrate the injuries suffered to a near-fully developed brain.

Illustrate the baby’s traumatic brain injury alongside a colorized X-ray of the baby’s leg fractures to assist in proving conscious pain and suffering.

Ground the TBI presentation with radiographic evidence using color to highlight the baby’s brain damage within an ultrasound.
Illustrating Baby's Brain Injuries
The first TBI exhibit illustrates the baby’s badly damaged brain along a colorized X-ray of her broken leg and an illustrated brain slice pointing out hemorrhaging. The large primary illustration of the baby’s head anchors the brutal reality of this deadly injury, while the brain slice at the top reinforces this visual with specific context.
