A cargo worker was driving a forklift onto the back of a freight truck when the truck suddenly pulled forward and the forklift plunged four feet into the ground, suffering two significant disc bulges throughout his thoracic spine and lumbar spine.
Challenge
The Shannon Law Group needed a visual presentation that would capture the full extent of their client’s pain, suffering, and ongoing recovery. We created a Cinematic Summary of Injuries (CSI) to establish his client’s damages, and we built a surgery animation to demonstrate the interbody fusion he would need to undergo as a result.
The following animations helped attorneys at the Shannon Law Group negotiate a $4.825M settlement for their client.
Exhibit A: Cinematic Summary of Injuries
The first exhibit summarizes the disc bulges throughout the plaintiff’s thoracic and lumbar spine while establishing the distance between a pre-existing tumor and the disc bulges he suffered from the forklift injury.
The animation opens with a 3D model of the plaintiff and then zooms in on his thoracic spine at the location of the tumor. It then pans down to reveal the two disc bulges located much lower on the spine - both reinforced with colorized MRI scans. After establishing this distance, the camera rotates around to an axial view of the vertebrae to focus on ligamentum flavun thickening and facetal arthopathy.

Exhibit B: Interbody Fusion Animation
The second animation walked jurors through the L4-5 posterior interbody fusion the plaintiff would need to undergo in an attempt to alleviate the painful symptoms caused by these injuries.
The animation opens with the posterior incision and exposure. It then shows the invasive process of burring the lamina, osteophytes, and medial facet joints so that disc material could be removed. The placement of a PEEK cage is depicted from an axial perspective, followed by the decortication of the facet joints and the placement of screws and rods.
