This medical animation demonstrates a type of traumatic brain injury called a coup-contrecoup injury. A coup-contrecoup occurs when the brain sustains trauma to both the site of impact (coup) and the opposite side of impact (contrecoup) as it recoils back and collides with the inner skull. This mechanism of injury causes sheering throughout the entire brain beyond just the initial impact.
The animation was used in mediation by Panish Shea & Boyle to show the injury a young girl suffered after the "S hook" at the top of the swing broke and she fell a considerable distance, hitting her head on the ground. The case resulted in a $3.75M settlement.
